Ya, inilah Sg Perting, di Bentong. Cantik kan?
Saya telah ke sana pada Hari Sungai Sedunia, iaitu Ahad yang lepas bersama dengan wartawan terkenal Hui Mei dan krew dari Astro AEC untuk rakaman sebuah program TV.(Tunggu Astro unumkan program itu nanti ya!)
Buat beberapa generasi , masyarakat Bentong, tidak kira kaum, telah menikmati air minuman bersih dan jernih dari Sg Perting. Malangnya, sesetengah orang yang berkuasa telah membenarkan operasi perlombongan pasir yang tidak mematuhi peraturan/ undang-undang dijalankan pada suatu ketika dulu. Sikap tidak peduli dan tidak hormati alam sekitar serta kesejahteraan rakyat telah menyebabkan Sg Perting menjadi keroh dan berlumpur. Tebing sungai pula buat masa ini dipenuhi dengan sampah dan sisa buangan pembinaan yang dibuang oleh orang tempatan yang tidak bertanggungjawab. Yang menghairankan, tiada sesiapapun yang mengambil berat tentang perkara ini, baik penduduk-penduduk tempatan mahupun pihak berkuasa. Ia seolah-olah tiada sesiapapun mampu mengaitkan kegiatan yang tidak bertanggungjawab ini dengan pencemaran sumber air minuman mereka.
Sg Perting membekalkan air minuman kepada lebih daripada 50,000 penduduk Bentong. Jarak dari muka sauk ke hutan simpanan cuma 3km. Mengapa kita boleh gagal untuk melindungi saliran hidup yang pendek ini?
Sungai adalah saluran darah mukabumi. Ia memberi nyawa kepada ekosistem. Kemudahan air bersih adalah hak asasi setiap orang. Oleh itu, adalah menjadi tanggungjawab suci kita untuk bertindak semana mungkin untuk melindungi sungai-sungai bagi memastikan bahawa generasi akan datang tidak kepupusan sumber air yang selamat untuk diminum.
Pejabat saya akan menganjurkan satu kempen gotong-royong untuk membersihkan kawasan Sg Perting dalam masa terdekat. Marilah kita bergabung tenaga untuk memulihkan kawasan ini supaya satu hari nanti kita dapat dengan bangga mewariskannya kepada anak cucu kita.

Was there last Sunday, on World Rivers Day, with popular newscaster Hui Mei and the crew from Astro AEC for the filming of a TV program. (I will leave it to Astro to announce the details of the program later).
For generations, the community of Bentong, regardless of race have enjoyed crystal clear mountain water from Sg. Perting. Unfortunately, some heartless people in power have allowed for irresponsible sand mining operations to take place at one time. This total disregard and respect for nature and the wellbeing of the people had caused Sg. Perting to turn muddy and unsightly. Currently, it’s river banks are piled up with trash and construction wastes, thrown by irresponsible and selfish locals. Yet, oddly, no one cares. Not the people, nor the authorities. No one seems to be able to comprehend the connection between these irresponsible acts and the contamination of their drinking water.
Sg. Perting supplies water to more than 50,000 residents of Bentong. The stretch from the water intake to the forest reserve area is only about 3km. How could we fail to protect this short little stretch of our lifeline?
A river is the bloodstream of the landscape. It gives life to the ecosystem. Access to clean water is the basic right of everyone. Therefore, it is our sacred duty to take every action possible to protect our rivers in order to ensure that our future generations can have a glass of clean safe water to drink.
My team will be organizing a gotong-royong campaign to clean up the Sg. Perting area very soon. Let us join hands to restore this area so that one day we can proudly hand over to our children.
