Only after the people exposed this issue, an EIA review was conducted in June 2014. It was subsequently rejected by the EIA review panel but to our total shock and dismay, on Dec 19th 2014, the EPD director unilaterally approved the EIA. And magically, on the very next day, Dec 20th, the project, with all farm infrastructure completed, was officially launched by Chief Minister Musa Aman. ‘State involved in destruction of Pitas mangrove’
Some 1,600 hectares of a gazetted mangrove area is being hacked to make way for a shrimp industry in Pitas, northeast Sabah and the company involved is least concerned about laws.
