Reject Lynas’ Attempt to Dump 1 Billion Kilograms of Radioactive Waste in Gebeng, Kuantan. 【DEADLINE 30 NOVEMBER 2021】

I know this ten-year long struggle has left many of us burnt out, bitter and disillusioned with the people whom we have pinned our hopes on. Many a time we just felt like giving out. Perhaps many already did. Even I myself had on many occasions over the years felt the same.

But let me tell you why I haven’t given up and why we must continue to stick together.

21,226 x 40-ft containers, lined up back-to-back, stretching 260km from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur.

This will be the sight you will see when the over 1 billion kilograms of toxic radioactive wastes Lynas is planning to dump on us are filled into containers.

In Australia, Lynas is required by the Western Australian (WA) government to return all the hazardous and radioactive wastes from its proposed Kalgoorlie Rare Earth processing plant to its Mount Weld mine site for disposal. Mount Weld is located 400km away from Kalgoorlie, lies on the desert, away from the aquifer. Nearest population centre is 35km away with about 1,500 people.

In Malaysia, our government has allowed Lynas to renege on their legal commitment to remove their radioactive wastes from Malaysia back to the place of origin. And now they are foolishly considering allowing Lynas to permanently dump their radioactive wastes merely 30 meters from their plant in Gebeng, on a flood-prone low-lying environmentally sensitive coastal wetland with groundwater less than 1 meter deep. There is a population of 700,000 people within a 30km radius.

The WA government has categorized Lynas’ radioactive wastes as low level radioactive waste which would usually require at least 10,000 years of isolation. The PDF in Gebeng proposed by Lynas merely has a 20-year design life. It’s cell liner base design concept uses HDPE membrane which is generally guaranteed for 25 years only.

Malaysians lives are just as valuable as Australians.

For the sake of our children and their children for many generations to come, please record your strongest protest against Lynas’ selfish and irresponsible act to dump their radioactive wastes in Gebeng by signing this online submission to the Department of Environment (DOE) 👉https://aidwatch.org.au/in-the-news/reject-lynas-rare-earths-radioactive-waste-unsafe-permanent-disposal-facility-pdf/?fbclid=IwAR0f2dPjGhWNhYhlKsSWh7mRXxDo7aqqqMoZ-UDWaspFmSgPHD_yvmOK53M

Thank you to our comrades in AID/WATCH Australia for preparing this online submission portal.
